Water is life and a fundamental human right!
The implementation of the high-impact A FOUNTAIN FOR SANOUKORO project has helped provide 400 households in Sanoukoro, Mali with access to clean and safe drinking water through the construction of a modern well and the rational and sustainable management of the water supply through the establishment of a water committee to ensure borehole. It has promoted sanitation, health and social development in this needy region of West Africa.
In addition, the project is helping to protect 150 schoolchildren aged 7 to 15 from road safety. These students have had to cross a very dangerous road to reach a polluted, unsanitary spring on the other side of the international highway (Burkina Faso – Mali) – always fearing not finding any water at all.
When the fountain project was handed over, the village leader, the teachers and the mayor of the Finkolo community thanked the donors and partners.
Results obtained by building the well
- The well now provides the population with safe and clean water.
- Water and hygiene-related diseases (such as diarrhea) in children aged 0 to 5 years are reduced.
- By taking into account the needs of all, community conflicts related to water are reduced.
- This project contributes to the achievement of SDGs 1, 3, 4 and 6 (UN Sustainable Development Goals).
The project gets its lasting effect from the participatory approach: the community members involved met before the construction work for awareness and information events. Training sessions have been held to educate members of the Water Committee on the management, repair and maintenance of the well.
Through partnerships, e.g. with the authorities and local technical services, the capacity of the community in terms of project implementation, certification of water analysis and support for advice to beneficiaries has been immensely strengthened.
