The innovative nutritional, educational and environmental project “Pilot Gardening” of the YOU Foundation – Education for Children in Need and its partners in the region of Thiès in Senegal combines professional education and ecological responsibility for the benefit of local youth.
The participants showed great interest in this project, which shows women and young people the relationship between quality of life, health and environmental management in climate change. The training garden and nursery was built in a fenced area of about 2000 square meters and water connection and storage were installed.
Existing buildings are used for sales and storage. Training courses and practical applications demonstrated the importance of green spaces and how to care for public gardens to participants. At the same time, the cultivation of vegetables and herbs strengthened nutritional knowledge and skills for self-sufficiency. Agricultural production increased, people generated income and found jobs outside the community. The goal of poverty alleviation was achieved.
The project will continue as a social and community project to ensure sustainability. A self-sustaining, self-reliant nursery has been created. We have reached 180 people directly and 2,200 people indirectly.
